Laylatul Qadr for Kids: Simple Guide

The Night Allah Sent Down the Quran

Allah says in the Qur’an:
إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ
“Indeed, We sent it down during the Night of Decree.”
Surah Al-Qadr 97:1

“A long time ago, on this very special night, Allah sent the first words of the Qur’an to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through Angel Jibreel.”

Allah ﷻ says in Surah Al-Qadr:
لَيْلَةُ ٱلْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ
“The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.”
Surah Al-Qadr 97:3
A thousand months is more than 83 years. Tell children: “One good deed on this night can become a huge treasure with Allah ﷻ”
Allah ﷻ also says:
إِنَّآ أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ فِى لَيْلَةٍ مُّبَـٰرَكَةٍ
“Indeed, We sent it down on a blessed night.”
Surah Ad-Dukhan 44:3
This is why Laylatul Qadr is a night of forgiveness, hope, and mercy. It is also why Laylatul Qadr is a night of salvation. On this night, families can ask Allah ﷻ for Jannah, protection, and a cleaner heart.
When Families Should Search
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught Muslims to search for Laylatul Qadr in the last ten nights of Ramadan, especially the odd nights. This meaning is mentioned in Sahih al-Bukhari 2017, where Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged Muslims to seek Laylatul Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan.
For kids, say:
“We do not know the exact night, so we try our best on the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th nights.”
If a child cannot stay awake, let them pray two rak’ahs, read a short surah, make dua, and sleep with love for Allah ﷻ
Which Dua Kids Learn
Mother Aishah رَضِيَ ﷲُ عَنْهَا asked Prophet Muhammad ﷺ what to say if she found Laylatul Qadr. He taught her:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي
“O Allah ﷻ,You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness, so forgive me.”
This dua is reported in Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 3513.
This is the recommended dua for Laylatul Qadr. Tell children:
“Ya Allah ﷻ erase my mistakes and help me become better.”
Simple Activities for Kids
Children learn better when they do something with their hands and heart.
